The Survival Group covers in depth Rations and Logistics including a page on building a Berkey Filter.

Berkey makes a tremendous filtration system. The great thing about their system is that you can buy the whole system or you can just buy the filters. Berkey filters and five-gallon buckets should be stored at your bugout location. These two things combined, with a few other elements can create a homemade Berkey filter.
You will need the following items to create your homemade Berkey water filter.

• Two 5-gallon food grade buckets
• Two lids for the buckets
• A pair of Black Berkey filter elements
• A food grade spigot

The first step in turning this collection of materials into a water filter is to drill two ½ inch holes into the bottom of the one bucket and into the top of one of the lids.
Next drill a ¾ inch hole on into the buck that has not been drilled into yet. This will be for your food grade spigot. This is the entirety of the drilling necessary for this project.
Attach the spigot using a food grade sealant. Remember, you are going to be pouring your pristine, filtered water through this spigot.

After that, install the two Berkey filter elements into the bucket with the two holes drilled into it.
At this point you can begin to assemble your filter.
Close the undrilled lid over the bucket with the filters. Sit that bucket on top of your next bucket. The bucket below should have a lid with ½ inch holes that line up with the filter holes. The filter tubes will extend into the second bucket if they are lined up right.

Finally, fill the top bucket with water. It will slowly begin to drip down to the lower buck. After a while you will have a five-gallon bucket of water that has been filtered using your own homemade filter.
