HAND AND ARM SIGNALS

Hand and arm signals are one of the most common forms of communication used during patrolling. These signals are a way for leaders to quietly exercise command and control over their patrol so it is imperative that all members understand each signal. Leaders of dismounted patrols will use these hand and arm signals to control the movement of both individuals and groups. These same hand and arm signals can be used to control vehicles movement formations.

Hand and arm signals

Stop:
1. Signal: Bend arm back, open hand, fingers extended and joined.
2. Action: All personnel get down on one knee and faces their security sector. When in file formation, everyone will take two steps to the side before getting down, forming a cigar shaped perimeter. This action is used when approaching enemy ground elements, or aircraft is heard in the distance and the patrol has sufficient time to seek cover and concealment
